To some bridal couples including their much loved pet in their wedding ceremony is a very important element of their day. So why shouldn’t Fido come dressed for the part?

Whether it’s a “Flowergirl” styled bow or a fresh flower collar for your special little princess or a Pet Tuxedo for your little buddy, pet wedding attire is becoming one of the fastest growing wedding accessories of today.

As your ring bearer, flower-dog, or honorary attendant, specially decorated and festive leashes, will help the human attendants keep the excited pet by their side.

While no one can blame you for wanting your special friend in attendance here are a few things that can help the day run smoothly for all involved.

  • Be sure to include an appropriate role for the dog, bearing in mind his/her age. While an older more disciplined dog might make an excellent ring bearer, a younger more excitable dog will just run rampant.
  • Ensure your pet is washed and groomed right before the ceremony to limit the amount of dander that is released as a special precaution to those guests with allergies.
  • Make sure that any “special” clothing or wedding attire you choose for your dog is pet appropriate, to enable him/her to easily relieve themselves without soiling the garment.
  • Make sure someone trustworthy is put in charge of the dog, to ensure that he is fed, watered, walked and given appropriate chances to have those much needed bathroom breaks, preferably before the ceremony.
  • Weddings can be stressful times, especially in the moments leading up to the ceremony. Make sure you are not putting your animal through unnecessary stress in your desire to have him in attendance.
  • While many wedding venues will decline the attendance of these four-legged family members, couples can still mark the occasion with a special wedding portrait.

Before you do include your pet in the wedding day, you need to be absolutely certain that your pet can be counted on to behave during the wedding. Some extra training may be necessary for your pet and the attendant who has been chosen to care for your pet.

Wedding traditions generally vary from family to family. One ritual usually remains the same: Something old, Something new, Something Borrowed and Something Blue! Something old symbolizes the recognition of the constancy and continuity of the past, which in turn offers comfort. Something new (usually the bridal gown), suggests a beautifully new and bright future together for the newlywed couple. Something borrowed signifies the hope that the new couple will also be blessed with a blissful and joyous life together, through the loan of this borrowed article. The something blue is often the bride’s garter. A penny, considered to be good luck, can be placed in the bride’s shoe.
